Check Engine Light in Austin, TX
What does the check engine light mean?
The check engine light is designed as an indicator for a larger issue. When the light goes on, it means the computer in your vehicle has determined a system or component in your emission control system isn't working as it should. When the light comes on, one or more codes are stored in the engine control model so technicians can determine the exact problem.
Look for a serious problem – Check for anything that may require your immediate attention. Look at your dashboard gauges to make sure your engine isn't overheating, or that you have low oil pressure. If you do notice either of these problems, pull over and shut off the car right away.
Tighten your gas cap – Check to see if your gas cap is tight. Many times, this is a quick and easy fix to the solution.
Reduce your speed – If the light is on and there are noticeable performance problems, slow down immediately. If you're pulling anything (i.e. a trailer), lighten your load as much as possible and stop towing until you can get your vehicle to a repair shop.
