Eillene Johnson is the Vice President of Leonard’s Garage & Service Center. She is also a realtor and former court reporter.

What Does It Mean to Be ASE Certified?

ASE is the abbreviation for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of auto repairs and service by testing and certifying mechanics across the United States. Since 1972, ASE has been the premier issuer of advanced professional automotive technician certifications.

When you entrust your vehicle to an ASE certified technician, you can be sure the mechanic working on your car or truck is, in fact, ASE certified. Simply, ASE does not certify entire auto repair shops, only individual mechanics. This means each of our technicians had to earn his or her certification for our shop to be ASE certified, which in turn means your car is in the hands of one of the most qualified professionals in the auto repair industry.

The Qualifications…

When we say our technicians are among the most qualified in the auto repair industry we mean it. Only one in three technicians who take the ASE certification exam for the first time will record a passing score. In addition, there are over 40 specialty subcategories where technicians can earn additional certifications.

Not only must candidates for ASE certification pass an independent, comprehensive exam, they must also have accumulated two years of practical experience or one year of practical experience with a two-year degree in the field of auto repair. Once certified, mechanics must retake and pass an updated exam every five years to maintain a current ASE certification.
