Brake Repair You Can Trust
Because your braking ability is crucial, it’s important to get brake repair you can trust. Having Leonard’s Automotive Service Center check your brakes periodically is a good idea. The most common brake repair we make is brake pad replacement. The brake pads used on most automobiles are made of metal. Thus, they’re durable but eventually wear down and must be exchanged for new ones. Brake pads should not be used beyond the recommended thickness to ensure sufficient friction between the pads and rotors to stop your car. If you begin to hear grinding when you apply brakes, the pads may have worn so thin that the calipers are cutting into the rotors, causing damage. Also, the automaker will specify a maintenance schedule that includes brake fluid change and/or flush. As the term suggests, a brake fluid change consists of emptying and refilling it. A flush, in contrast, entails forcing fluid through under pressure until all contaminants are gone before refilling the system. Since fluid pressure is necessary for the system to function, it’s important to let us address any leaks in the lines or cylinders/master cylinders that allow fluid to escape. Low fluid levels may cause you to feel that the brake pedal is soft or spongy under your foot, and you may lose the ability to stop. Finally, a stuck brake caliper can cause a burning odor. It needs repairing because the stuck caliper causes excessive heat that can warp the rotor and wear to the pad.
